Conditions Related to Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is sometimes confused with other conditions, such as psoriasis affecting the nails. The symptoms can appear to be similar, but the causes and treatments are different. This is one of the most important reasons to see your doctor if you think you have a fungal nail infection. Proper diagnosis is an important step towards a successful treatment or cure. To learn more about psoriasis, see www.psoriasis.org.

Diseases which affect the immune system can also contribute to nail fungus. Any condition which lowers the body's ability to fight off infection makes one more likely to be afflicted by nail fungus. People who have Diabetes are more likely to have fungal nail infections, and should take extra care to protect their feet from fungi. See more in the prevention section of our site.

Treatments for cancer, such as chemotherapy, can also lower the body's immune system and contribute to fungal nail infections. Since nail fungus is a relatively harmless condition, though troublesome, this is considered a very minor side effect of a treatment for cancer.
