Prevention

One of the most important steps in preventing nail infections is to keep nails well trimmed, but not overtrimming them. Cutting the nail too short can cause small cuts and tears, which could allow fungal organisms to penetrate your nail bed. Do not use sharp or pointed instruments to remove nail debris. By doing this, you risk serious injury to your finger and toenails. These tears/cuts in your skin can leave an open door for fungi to get in.

To prevent toenail fungal infections, keep your feet as dry and clean as possible at all times. Change socks and shoes frequently. If you have athelete's foot, treat it regularly. Athelete's foot is a fungus which can spread to your toenails. It can usually be treated successfully with an over the counter ointment or spray, such as Lotrimin, Tinactin, or Lamisil creme.

Do not share nail clippers with anyone else, as it is possible to transmit the fungus.

One of the most important steps for preventing fungal infections of the toes and fingers is to avoid biting your nails. It seems harmless, but because it is less precise than nail clippers, can lead to tearing and exposure of the nailbed. Biting and ripping the nail off can give the infection an opening in which to get under the nailbed. Remember, think of your fingernails and toenails as the armor which protects the delicate skin underneath. It is vital to protect this vulnerable skin at all costs.
