The fungal organisms that cause nail infections are present almost everywhere. Once they penetrate the nail bed they can be difficult to cure. Nail Fungus can be caused by an injury which allows the organisms a way to enter the skin. Care should be used when trimming nails. Do not cut them too short, as this can as this can result in small cuts. Nail Biting can also contribute to this condition. Nail biting can leave the nail without its natural protection against infections.
The fungi that cause nail infections are related to those that cause athelete's foot, jock itch, and other fungal infections. They are usually present in damp public areas such as gyms and locker rooms. Be sure to wear something on your feet (like cheap flip-flops) when in areas like this.
Jobs that cause the hands or feet to be damp for extended periods of time can contribute to the growth of fungus in nails. Always keep your feet as dry as possible, and change socks frequently.
Fingernail polish may also contribute to nail fungus, as it does not fully allow the nail to breathe. Most people will not develop a fungal nail infection simply from wearing too much fingernail polish, but if an infection is present, it may be wise to stop using such products. Ask your doctor for more information.
